Per Article 81 of the "Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China and its implementing regulations", when driving on expressways in low-visibility weather such as fog, rain, snow, sand and dust, or hail, motor vehicles shall comply with the following: (1) when visibility is less than 200 meters, turn on fog lights, low beams, side marker lights, and front and rear position lights, do not exceed 60 km/h, and keep more than 100 meters from the front vehicle; (2) when visibility is less than 100 meters, turn on fog lights, low beams, side marker lights, front and rear position lights, and hazard warning flashers, do not exceed 40 km/h, and keep more than 50 meters from the front vehicle; (3) when visibility is less than 50 meters, turn on fog lights, low beams, side marker lights, front and rear position lights, and hazard warning flashers, do not exceed 20 km/h, and exit the expressway from the nearest exit as soon as possible. The expressway authority should also issue speed-limit and following-distance reminders via display screens.
